These are the winning students and adults in the 2017 VS- A Live Art Battle
One of my favorite things to do is to volunteer for Mark Arts in Wichita, KS. I'm a student and I am also on the Board of Trustees for Mark Arts. As a board member I chair Special Events. The concept for VS - A Live Art Battle was developed in 2015 and we soon realized that this should be our annual fundraiser. Involving guests in the process of painting was engaging and energizing.
Friday, September 22nd was our third annual VS - A Live Art Battle. The day began with area high school students competing in the morning with a group of their friends, family and teachers cheering them on. The competition is a live art smackdown performed in 3 - 20 minute rounds. Round 1 starts with 6 artists on stage in front of a blank white canvas that is 24" x 36". The crowd counts down the clock and the competition begins with paint flying and artists contemplating their next stroke. The crowd becomes completely engrossed in the process as the paintings begin to emerge. Most of the artists said they were scared at first but once they started painting on their canvas they just got lost in their work. Everyone at the event has a voting chip for each round which they put in the artists voting paint can. Round 2 is 6 new artists on stage vying for a chance to win their round. The winner of round 1 and round 2 are announced and they go head to head in the championship round. The artists with the most voting chips in their buckets win! The students all receive scholarship money, the winner and runner up win even more scholarship money.
In the evening we do the event all over again except with adult artists competing this time. VIP guests arrive early to "meet the artists". They have a chance to see the work these artists create in their studios before they see what they come up with in just 20 minutes time. The event runs the exact same as the students. The prize for the champion of this event receives a solo exhibition at Mark Arts.
I can't wait to see how VS expands in 2018 when Mark Arts is in its new location at 13th & Rock Road! Below is a photo of the new building.
